School-based apprenticeships and traineeships, Victoria

Nearing the end of school and wondering what is a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship? School-based traineeships and school-based apprenticeships are undertaken part time whilst the apprentice or trainee is still at school.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid employment as an apprentice or trainee, off-the-job vocational training (through a registered training organisation or RTO) and senior secondary school studies.

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship provides senior secondary school students with hands-on industry experience, and the ability to work towards or complete a nationally recognised qualification, whilst completing school. See if Victorian Group Training has a school-based apprenticeship or school-based traineeship job for you, or register with us if you’re interested in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

To undertake a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, a student must undertake a minimum of 13 hours combined work and training per week.  Generally this involves one day per week at work, and the other at either ‘trade school’ (RTO) or on-the-job training provided by the RTO.  This arrangement will vary depending on the qualification and the RTO used.

When can you start a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship?

You can start at any time, however these are the first steps to take if you are a student and are interested in undertaking a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship:

  • Speak with your parents or guardians about it. Do they support you becoming an apprentice or trainee?
  • Speak to your careers advisor at your school. Do they support you becoming an apprentice or trainee?
  • If yes to both, speak with Victorian Group Training!

By following these simple steps, Victorian Group Training can assist you in kick-starting your career with a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.
